Description
The end of the qualifying matches and the upcoming draw for the group stage of the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia has apparently woken someone up at Topps and reminded them that back in 2022 they had planned to release a collection for this very competition.
After the release date had been continuously pushed back for almost a year, the collection disappeared from all announcement lists in mid-2023, so hardly anyone was still expecting it to be released. At least until someone at Topps reopened the drawer where the collection had vanished in the meantime, allowing it to finally see the light of day in November 2024.
Even though the next U-21 European Championship is already approaching, Topps has decided not to update the content of the Bowman Chrome U-21 collection and continues to focus on the qualifying matches for the 2023 U-21 European Championship in Romania & Georgia, which were played between June 2021 and June 2022.
With the very first Bowman collection in soccer, the spotlight therefore returns to a large number of young players who were able to showcase themselves on a big stage for the first time back then and have since established themselves in international professional soccer.
However, due to the late release date, Topps clearly misses its traditional goal of producing the very first trading card for these young players in the U-21 Bowman Chrome collection and marking it with the 1st Bowman symbol. Almost all of the players have since appeared in other Topps collections, meaning that the 1st Bowman symbol, in its intended sense of appearing before the official rookie card, is rendered somewhat absurd in this collection.
Base Cards
The 2022 TOPPS Bowman Chrome Road to UEFA Under-21 Championship Soccer Cards collection features a 150-card base set for collectors, showcasing the best young prospects from the U-21 qualifying matches of 2022.
Parallels
Topps has produced 12 parallel variants for these cards, 3 of which are unnumbered, while the other 9 are numbered to /199 or lower. However, something apparently went rather wrong when the colors were mixed, as the Yellow Parallels numbered to /75 by Topps feature an almost identical orange color to the Orange Parallels numbered to /25.
Insert Cards
Collectors can also look forward to a total of 5 insert categories with 1989 Bowman, Carry the Flag, Chrome Prospects Golden Ball Die-Cuts, Home Strip Hopefuls and XInevitables.
Autograph Cards
Alongside the Base Autograph Cards, the collection also includes autograph cards styled after the 1989 Bowman and Home Strip Hopefuls insert categories.
The XInevitables Autographs and the Dual Autograph Cards add cards featuring the signatures of 2 young stars to the collection. As a special highlight, collectors can pull a Bowman Ultimate Book Card that combines the signatures of 24 players in a single book card.
Availability
The collection, originally planned for 2022, brings back the Hobby Box and LITE Box product variants that were typical for the intended release year, but failed to catch on with collectors and were subsequently discontinued by Topps in the following seasons.
Buyers of the 2022 Bowman Chrome Road to U-21 Euro Hobby Box can look forward to 80 cards per box, spread across 20 packs with 4 cards each. According to Topps, these always include 1 autograph card. The more affordable LITE Box contain 64 cards across 16 packs with 4 cards each, but no autograph card is guaranteed. Instead, they include exclusive Black & White Ray Wave Parallels and Black & White Ray Wave Autograph Cards, which in turn cannot be pulled from Hobby Box packs.
The release date announced by Topps for 2022 TOPPS Bowman Chrome Road to UEFA Under-21 European Championship Soccer Cards is Friday, the 15th of November 2024.
Topps does not offer the Bowman Chrome Soccer boxes in its own online shop, instead bringing them to collectors somewhat through the back door after the long delay. The products from the collection can be found at retailers specializing in sports cards. The previously mentioned date should therefore only be regarded as a rough guideline, as availability depends heavily on when the products arrive at the respective retailers.
